Hey y'all, Happy New Year! Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - It was a tough one, but I came up with 100 things that made my year.
- In case you missed it over the holiday break, here are 15 great books I read last year.
- Reluctantly, I wrote about productivity and getting things done. (My best advice: "Get yourself a calendar!")
- A comic diary written and drawn in the Gulag.
- More from the blog: two quick thoughts about books, Kraftwerk in the studio, a poem about watching TV, and Thoreau on how you receive what you're ready to receive.
- Eye candy: Don Hertzfeldt's World of Tomorrow Episode Two is now available to rent. You can stream episode one on Netflix. They're both wonderful.
- Ear candy: David Byrne's radio is currently dedicated to gospel, and there's some good stuff in Vox's Earworm series: I especially like the ode to gated reverb and how J Dilla humanized his sampler. (I love Donuts.)
- I've heard good things from my friends about Pop-Up Magazine, so I was excited to hear that the upcoming tour includes Austin.
- Speaking of Austin (the city), I had a fun time on the I Love You So Much Podcast talking about walking and how to be more creative this year.
- RIP Fred Bass, who made the Strand Bookstore a Mecca. (When I visited NYC for the first time at 19, I shopped at the Strand.)
Thanks for reading! If you like this newsletter, forward it to a friend, buy a book, a calendar, or tweet me some love. If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here. xoxo, Austin PS. This new calendar is really cool. Better than last year's, even, which had solid reviews. Check it out. | |
