how to keep going talk
Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
  1. "How To Keep Going," my talk about staying creative in chaotic times. I really loved giving this talk. (And as I've hinted before, it's a preview of my next book.) Please share with anybody you think needs to see it. (And let me know if you want me to come give it at your next event!)

  2. Does having a day job mean making better art?

  3. I'm currently reading Frederic Gros's A Philosophy of Walking and Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe Of Heaven, which is good, but because it is all about dreams and sleeping, knocks me out about 2-3 pages in. (Did you know UKLG put out an electronica album?)

  4. Community and creativity in mundane retail spaces.

  5. This 2005 BBC4 interview with Kate Bush touches on so many things that interest me: the creative process vs. publicity, motherhood and art, digital tools vs. the human voice... it's great. (Have you listened to "Cloudbusting" lately? Holy moly.)

  6. Quick thoughts on writing.

  7. In China and Japan a copy is just as good as the original.

  8. Ear and eye candy: I re-watched Phantom Thread a few nights ago and it was even weirder (and funnier!) than I remembered. (I love the soundtrack.) Also: Prince's long-out-of-print movie, Sign O' The Times, is streaming on Prime

  9. Collaging with a 5-year-old.

  10. Why we need better images.

help me be worthy of my life
Hey y'all,

This week was totally nuts, but everybody in my house is safe and sound and Bach in the swing of things.

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing:
  1. What happens when my 5-year-old hangs out in the studio. (Bonus link: "How To Make Your Life Go On Forever.")

  2. I am reading Ursula K. Le Guin's The Lathe of Heaven. It is awesome so far. (The Left Hand of Darkness was the first book I read after the 2016 election.)

  3. Keeping a diary in a Nazi prison camp. (A little lighter: the Zen diaries of Gary Shandling.)

  4. Questlove talks about his new book, Creative Quest. (I enjoyed his memoir, Mo' Meta Blues, and his book on Soul Train.)

  5. Artist Wendy MacNaughton just paid off $100k in student loan debt and had some things to say. (See also: Kio Stark's book, Don't Go Back To School, and, for some other stuff on debt, see Roxane Gay and Sarah Smarsh's interviews in Scratch: Writers, Money, and the Art of Making a Living.)

  6. Photographer Bill Cunningham left behind a "secret" memoir, Fashion Climbing. (If you haven't seen it, the documentary Bill Cunningham New York is terrific.)

  7. Speaking of wonderful human beings, bring tissues, because the new Mr. Rogers documentary looks wonderful

  8. Ear candy: this mellow version of Wire's "Outdoor Miner" and all 8 hours of Max Richter's Sleep are now streaming.

  9. Reminder: Iggy Pop's cockatoo's Instagram is the best.

  10. RIP Anthony Stephan House and Draylen Mason.

students take matters into their own hands
Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
  1. I took a week-long trip with my family to San Francisco and now it's SXSW, but I did keep up the daily blog. Some favorite posts: why singing is so good for you, an encounter with a painter who says his work feels more like play, an astronomer's perspective on cosmic perspective, being worthy of your life, and thoughts on my youngest son turning 3.

  2. I'm finishing up Diane Ackerman's A Natural History of the Senses. (I've already added it to my recommended reading.)

  3. A parable about what can happen when we share what we love: "The Broccoli Tree."

  4. I work in my garage, so I liked this look inside Marc Maron's garage. (I love that he keeps stacks of Please Kill Me to give to guests.)

  5. Memorable moments from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Mr. Rogers was quite simply one of the most decent Americans who ever lived. I haven't seen the new documentary, but I loved this old one from PBS. See also: Mr. Rogers on drawing and his mother's advice to "look for the helpers."

  6. Because you know I'll link to almost anything Moomins related: Rhianna Pratchett on her and her father's love for the Moomins.

  7. Parents: check out The Kid Should See This, a website of "not-made-for-kids, but perfect for them" videos. (Their gift guide is awesome.) Oh, and my 3-year-old is obsessed with Super Simple Draw, which is sort of like an animated Ed Emberley book.

  8. Celebrating its 21st anniversary, George Saunders' debut, CivilWarLand in Bad Decline, is on sale for $2.99. Here's what he taught me about being a decent writer and a decent dad at the same time.

  9. Combining my love for talking to strangers and looking at the moon, here's a lovely video about inviting strangers to look at the moon.

  10. Obituaries of remarkable women who were overlooked by the NYTimes.

PS. Here's a selfie I took with Mac and Laura of the band Superchunk :) Our SXSW panel was fun — thanks to everybody who came out.
