Hey y'all,
Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - I'm traveling with the whole family this week, so my daily blog might feel a little lighter than usual. (A few favorite posts from earlier in the week: writing your own sequel, creative card games, why I start each new book with a fresh banker's box, and creativity as a renewable energy.)
- Last weekend I devoured James Carse's Finite and Infinite Games. I added it and bunch of other books to my recommended reading site. So far my reading year has been a bit of a nonfiction sausagefest, so I'm going to check out a few of the books on this list of remarkable recent fiction written by women. (Homesick for Another World has to be one of the best titles ever.)
- For years, Sara Bader's Quotenik was one of my favorite sites, dedicated to accurate and fully-attributed quotes from creative people. She's now edited two great books of quotes: Art Is The Highest Form of Hope and a new one, Every Day a Word Surprises Me.
- Some other smart friends have books out: Ryan Holiday's Conspiracy is getting great reviews and Erika Hall has a brand-new (so new I haven't gotten my copy yet) one out, Conversational Design.
- People have (rightly) been raving about Emily Wilson's translation of The Odyssey—here's a terrific Twitter thread where she talks about the Sirens.
- Eye candy: Mozart's diary, the anatomy of Peanuts characters, and Vanessa Davis drawing charcoal murals.
- A poem: W.S. Merwin's "Exercise" (Spotted in Matthew Ogle's POME newsletter.)
- To watch: I am a gigantic fan of the writer and artist Joe Brainard. Filmmaker Matt Wolf has made his short film about him available for only $1. (Wolf made another film about one of my favorite artists: Arthur Russell.)
- RIP Tower Records founder Russ Solomon.
- If you're attending SXSW, come see me interview Mac and Laura from Superchunk! (I'm currently reading Our Noise: The Story of Merge Records for research.)
