| Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - What my diary looks like.
- I'm re-reading Rob Walker's The Art of Noticing because we're speaking together at the Texas Book Festival on Sunday here in Austin at 11:45 a.m. Rob's one of my favorite writers, so it's going to be a real treat. If you can't make our talk, we'll be in the signing tent afterwards around 1PM. (Check out Rob's excellent newsletter if you haven't yet.)
- I was in the New York Times talking about how to give people advice. (More of my thoughts: "Advice can be a vice.")
- Life advice from Glenn O'Brien, from his new one, Intelligence for Dummies.
- A mini-portrait of growing up in a small, loving house in a great city and being given the time, space, and materials to do your work: At home with Finneas.
- Jeff Bridges takes photographs.
- That's how many years Owen Kleon has been alive! Happy birthday to my favorite musician.
- Eye candy: My wife and I are spending our evenings watching old black and white horror movies. Favorites this week: The Old Dark House, The Black Cat, and White Zombie. Old favorites: Freaks, Island of Lost Souls, and the films of Val Lewton, like Cat People and I Walked With A Zombie. (I picked up this Universal Monsters set so we could catch up on more.)
- Ear candy: I rarely make time to listen to podcasts, but I think I'm going to make an exception for Dolly Parton's America.
- RIP writer Nick Tosches.
Thanks for reading. If you like this newsletter and want to support it, forward it to someone who'd like it or, even better, buy them a book! If you're seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here. xoxo, Austin PS. My latest book is ridiculously cheap on Amazon right now. | | | |
