Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. What my diary looks like.

  2. I'm re-reading Rob Walker's The Art of Noticing because we're speaking together at the Texas Book Festival on Sunday here in Austin at 11:45 a.m. Rob's one of my favorite writers, so it's going to be a real treat. If you can't make our talk, we'll be in the signing tent afterwards around 1PM. (Check out Rob's excellent newsletter if you haven't yet.)

  3. I was in the New York Times talking about how to give people advice. (More of my thoughts: "Advice can be a vice.")

  4. Life advice from Glenn O'Brien, from his new one, Intelligence for Dummies.

  5. A mini-portrait of growing up in a small, loving house in a great city and being given the time, space, and materials to do your work: At home with Finneas.

  6. Jeff Bridges takes photographs.

  7. That's how many years Owen Kleon has been alive! Happy birthday to my favorite musician.

  8. Eye candy: My wife and I are spending our evenings watching old black and white horror movies. Favorites this week: The Old Dark House, The Black Cat, and White Zombie. Old favorites: Freaks, Island of Lost Souls, and the films of Val Lewton, like Cat People and I Walked With A Zombie. (I picked up this Universal Monsters set so we could catch up on more.)

  9. Ear candy: I rarely make time to listen to podcasts, but I think I'm going to make an exception for Dolly Parton's America.

  10. RIP writer Nick Tosches.

the digestive system

Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. Why I keep putting out this newsletter

  2. The many lives of Lafcadio Hearn and why his ghost stories still haunt us. (I'm reading Japanese Ghost Stories at night before bed. During the day, I'm enjoying the short essays in Elisa Gabbert's The Word Pretty and the "micro memoirs" in Beth Ann Fennelly's Heating & Cooling.

  3. Stephen King's house to become an archive and writer's retreat.

  4. The monarch butterflies are making their way through Austin again and they're so lovely.

  5. Cas Holman's search for the ideal playground. (I need to make time to watch Abstract: The Art of Design on Netflix.)

  6. A stone is a marvelous thing.

  7. An interview with animator Don Hertzfeldt. (And a followup tweet.)

  8. Ear candy: I've mainly just been listening to New Order's "Your Silent Face" and my New Division Joy Order playlist on repeat. Very autumnal.

  9. Eye candy: Fleabag's Titian.

  10. RIP poet John Giorno. RIP designer Philip Gips. RIP actor Robert Forster. (And so many others. What a week.)

Who’s having fun?

In this week's newsletter: how to know you're reading the right book, free online art, and more...

who's having fun?

Hey y'all,

San Francisco: Hope to see you next week for my talk at Litquake

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:

  1. A question I ask myself a lot these days: "Who's having fun?" (I'm having fun adding the wrong words to the four-year-old's drawings.)

  2. How I know I'm reading the right book.

  3. A poem to internalize. (Reading Van Gogh: The Life, I found myself siding with Van Gogh's parents that he should shut up and just try to hold down a job for a while, so I had to switch to something completely different and read Ron Padgett's poetry collection, Big Cabin. I love Padgett's stuff — his Collected Poems is mammoth and great, and if you've ever seen Paterson, Jim Jarmusch asked Padgett to write a bunch of the poems in the movie.)

  4. The Van Gogh museum has a wonderful online print collection. (I especially love all the Hiroshige and Vallotton prints. Still haven't found any of Van Gogh's collages or commonplace books, though. Let me know if you've seen them!)

  5. A 97-year-old professor here in Austin is officially the oldest person to win the Nobel Prize. (Dr. Goodenough, who has the best name, was profiled three few years ago in the NYTimes: "To Be A Genius, Think Like A 94-Year-Old.")

  6. Margaret Atwood recommends one of my favorite books, Lewis Hyde's The Gift. The book has inspired a new film, Gift, which is now screening in select theaters.

  7. A visit to Sandra Boynton's studio.

  8. RIP photographer Jill Freedman. (Her estate has posted a lot of her stuff on Instagram.)

  9. RIP drummer Ginger Baker. (Some clips of him drumming, here.)

  10. Everyone can be Batman.
