thankful robot
Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
  1. Thanksgiving (in the US) is over, but I hope your thanks-giving is perpetual, you'll keep giving thanks like an emperor, and you'll keep using anthropology to deal with a-holes.

  2. I finally finished Laura Walls' wonderful biography of Thoreau. Recommended. (I was happy to see it on PW's Best Books of 2017 and the NYTimes' 100 Notable Books of 2017.)

  3. If you need more things to read this weekend, I updated my recommended reading site.

  4. Annie Proulx's speech at the National Book Awards. (Some encouragement for aspiring writers: she didn't start writing until she was 58!)

  5. In case you missed it, folks really seemed to dig my interview about analog tools on Hurry Slowly. (But please do not call me an "expert" or a "guru.")

  6. The defiance of Tove Jansson, mother of Moomins. (Oh how I love her comics!)

  7. Ear candy: KUTX re-aired my hour-long DJ set yesterday. You can stream it online. (Also: I'm still listening to Carly Rae Jepsen.)

  8. A few notes on my daily blogging experiment.

  9. RIP Malcolm Young. (Oh man, that guitar sound is evil.)

  10. Ho, ho, ho! It's that time again. Here's the Kleon Holiday Gift Guide!
Thanks for reading. If you like this newsletter, forward it to a friend, buy a book, a t-shirt (only a week left to get one!), a calendar, or tweet me some love

log off mute all carry on
Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
  1. Log off, mute all, carry on.

  2. This week I finished The Importance of Living, a 1937 bestseller that's basically about the ancient Chinese art of chilling out and living a good life. (As needed today as it was 80 years ago!) Will Schwalbe kept mentioning it in Books for Living, so I had to check it out. One thing: If you pick it up, know that Lin Yutang's attitude towards women is pretty sexist. (I might skip chapter 8, about the home, completely.) Still, I think it's a good read. (The only other person I know besides Will who recommended it was the late, great Amy Krouse Rosenthal.)

  3. What you should read, depending on the season.

  4. Lin Yutang wrote that Thoreau was the "most Chinese" American writer, which is funny, because I can't stop reading Laura Walls' new biography. (I've been reading it so much my wife complained that Thoreau's eyes on the cover were creeping her out.)

  5. One way to get unblocked: make something for somebody.

  6. A great interview with cartoonist Chris Ware. (I love what he says about drawing and the fact that he has a picture of Mr. Rogers above his desk.) His new book looks amazing.

  7. Paper is a wonderful technology.

  8. Ear candy: I've been revisiting a favorite record, The Futureheads, and I am unashamed to say that I am a new fan of Carly Rae Jepsen: I can't stop listening to her song, "Cut To The Feeling," and her last record, Emotion. (No guilty pleasures!

  9. The most hated poet in Portland. (Jon Ronson's great book So You've Been Publicly Shamed seems more and more relevant to me these days...)

  10. The case for RSS. (A reminder: I have this ancient thing called a "blog" that I post to every day...)
Thanks for reading! If you like this newsletter, forward it to a friend, buy a book, buy the new calendar, or tweet me some love

you are allowed to change your mind
Hey y'all,

Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week:
  1. You are allowed to change your mind.

  2. I was on Jocelyn Glei's new podcast, Hurry Slowly, and we talked about analog vs. digital tools, the beauty of constraints, and how slowing down can make your work better

  3. The tension between creativity and productivity.

  4. How to remember what you read.

  5. People matching artworks.

  6. Eye candy: Ralph Steadman draws Kurt Andersen. I could watch him draw all day. Here he is in his studio. (If you like those links, check out the documentary about him, For No Good Reason.)

  7. Ear candy: listening to a lot of William Onyeabor and this Nigeria 70 compilation.

  8. Celebrities pick their favorite books of 2017. I was chuffed that actor Jason Segel put Steal Like An Artist on his list, saying, "You can flip through this book in 30 min and be inspired by it for weeks." Dang, man! That's a blurb. (I'm a huge fan of Forgetting Sarah Marshall, btw.)

  9. Another great romantic comedy: my wife and I re-watched When Harry Met Sally. What a delightful movie. Here's 15 fun facts about it, and a discussion between Nora Ephron and Rob Reiner

  10. Favorite posts from this week's blogging: a crowdfunding platform for shutting people up, Jesus next doorart monsters, and Thoreau, first books, and failure
