| Hey y'all, Here are 10 things I thought were worth sharing this week: - Start before you think you're ready.
- I really enjoyed Big Ideas for Curious Minds, an introduction to philosophy for children from The School of Life. (Instead of looking at my phone, I've been starting my mornings by reading books I've purchased for my kids.) Another book I'm reading as a followup: Philosophy and the Young Child, which makes the case that young children are natural philosophers.
- I also finished up Elisa Gabbert's The Word Pretty. I gobble down short essay collections like this — I'd shelve it with Mary Ruefle's Madness, Rack, and Honey and Sarah Ruhl's 100 Essays I Don't Have Time To Write.
- Why it's hard to fake kids' drawings.
- Five good books I read this summer. (For more to read: the rest of my reading year and the decade or so before it.)
- Poetry: a Frank O'Hara memorial and Edna, laying it down: "I shall love you always. / No matter what party is in power."
- Ear candy: after seeing a great video of the Soul Stirrers, I've been listening to Sam Cooke's SAR Records Story 1959-1965. I love hearing his studio banter and his demos for songs like "You Send Me." (More: "Sam Cooke's SAR label still sounds heavenly.")
- TV: My wife and I finally binged the first season of What We Do In The Shadows, a worthy followup to the movie.
- Unpaid endorsement: Oatly! How I make my favorite morning drink: 1) brew coffee 2) check the carafe 3 hours later and be shocked that there's still any coffee left in it 3) add ice cubes and a splash of oat milk.
- Drawing the moon.
